Know someone who has been an unsung hero for children in Washington County? Someone who again and again goes ‘above and beyond’ for the children of our community? Nominate her/him for the prestigious 2015 “Champion for Children” Award offered by the Washington County Coalition for Children (WCCC). But hurry, the deadline is Monday, May 4th.

Candidates can be advocates, volunteers, elected officials, nonprofit agency directors or board members, teachers, service providers, journalists, and other community leaders. He or she must have demonstrated a long-term passion for children. Current WCCC members are ineligible for the award.

This will be the 12th year WCCC has honored someone who has promoted, secured, and/or delivered quality services to children and families in an exemplary fashion. Past winners include:

• Ella Whaley, South Kingstown Town Council and local children’s advocate
• Sensei Andrew Cornell, Gabrieles Martial Arts;
• Olympic Physical Therapy, Community Health & Fitness Programs;
• Pediatrician Celeste Corcoran, Coastal Medical: Narragansett Bay Pediatrics;
• Candy Lodge, North Kingstown Special Olympics;
• South Kingstown School Superintendent Dr. Robert Hicks;
• Tammy McNeiece, Special Education teacher at Curtis Corner Middle School;
• Deedra Durocher, foster parent and business leader;
• Kim Bossian, Head Start Health Coordinator for South County Community Action;
• Mark Hawk, Special Education Director for Westerly School Department; and
• Wilburn Logan of the Family Advocacy Project

Anyone can submit nominations, but the deadline is Monday, May 4, 2015. The winner will be honored at the Coalition’s 13th Annual Children’s Issues Forum/Breakfast that will be held on Wednesday, June 3rd at The Village Inn in Narragansett.
