Releases toolkit for teaching kindness
After a year in gestation, the Coalition released an exciting toolkit of lesson plans and fun activities utilizing nine select picture books. The kit includes lots of other resources for preschools and families of young children.
Aligned with Rhode Island Early Learning Standards Birth to Five, the Planting the Seeds of Kindness in Preschoolers toolkit is designed to help educators and parents promote empathy and social-emotional skills.
The Coalition held a two-part training this fall entitled “Teaching Kindness and Acceptance in Early Childhood Settings.” More than 30 child care providers participated, with 15 early child care and education sites planning to use the toolkit with their students this year.
9 books for the young ones
The toolkit includes the following nine children’s books:
One
Zero
The Way I Act
Only One You
Anh’s Anger
The Crayon Box That Talked
Because Amelia Smiled
Poppleton and Friends
The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin
“I can’t say enough in praise of the Coalition members who volunteered their expertise to select the picture books, design lesson plans, compile resources, and reach out to the early childhood community to promote its use,” says Coalition Coordinator Susan Orban.
The project was made possible thanks to a legislative grant secured by Rep. Donna Walsh (District 36).
